Before you begin
Before you start, here are some essential points:
Start with short sessions – no more than 5 to 10 minutes
at a time.
You should only allow your child to be at the computer for
in short stretches. More than about 10 minutes at a time is not good
for them and won’t help them learn.
Make sure your child is comfortable at the computer
Being comfortable in front of the computer is very important.
Your child should be safely seated. Sitting on your lap is a good
idea, but they should be able to view the screen without bending their
neck. Make sure that their eyes are roughly two-thirds of the way
up the monitor height. Their head should be at a distance of about
24 inches (60 cm) from the screen.
Think about safety issues
Computers aren’t an immediate risk to health. But bad habits
with the computer can develop quickly. Make sure that your monitor
is correctly adjusted. Start early in training your child to:
- have a good posture in front of the computer (good seating is
important)
- look away from the screen every so often (to avoid fixing the
gaze and so potentially damaging the eyes)
- take a break of at least a few minutes every 10 or 15 minutes
- don’t spend hours on the computer
- stay calm and not get stressed
Make learning fun for your child and for you!
